Many people who go to San Francisco go straight to the typical tourist attractions… Fisherman’s Wharf, the Golden Gate Bridge, riding the cable cars & Union Square. These things can be fun but there are better things to do. I personally like San Francisco for its neighbourhoods and the topography, and simply walking around can give you the best feel for one of the greatest cities in the world. Suggestions include… - Coit Tower at night… both North Beach with its Italian restaurants and cafes and Chinatown are close by, and there are great views from Coit Tower. Pick a restaurant by its popularity… the more people that are there, the better the restaurant! - Union Street (not Union Square)… nice shops and nice restaurants, the heart of Pacific Heights - Ocean Beach, hiking around the Cliff House restaurant… great for the views and not too crowded - Taking the ferry to Sausalito or Tiburon… just the trip across the bay and the views of the Golden Gate Bridge make it worth it - Haight-Ashbury up to Golden Gate Park… the Grateful Dead & Hippie culture, probably better during the day - Alcatraz – definitely touristy but in my opinion worth it, do book your reservation in advance I have heard cities described as a one day, a three day, or a five day destination for a visit, and San Francisco and the surrounding areas are definitely worth five days. |
